AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
As described in detail on the About page under Scope, this project began with the identification of standing mid-century African American schools across Louisiana. As with any preservation project, it is critical to thoroughly understand what exists before making any kind of recommendations. In this case, a particular goal was to determine what variation existed in building sizes and layouts, site sizes and conditions, and location demographics, assets, and challenges. Information was also sought on existence any stakeholder preservation interests and actions. This information served to inform the content of the school preservation manual. The list of schools that follows also stands on its own as a resource simply to know and recognize the legacies that survive in built form across the state of Louisiana. Most of these buildings are not yet graced by historic markers to tell their stories.
This school list and mapping data was compiled by Tulane School of Architecture Graduate Research Fellows, Laurel Fay, Kaylan Mitchell, and Mary Helen Porter in 2020-2021. Their work would not have been possible without AfricanAmericanHighSchoolsInLouisianaBefore1970.com, created by Dr. Russell Hill and Mr. Ken Groomes, and the associated ArcGIS map and story map “Historic African-American High Schools of Louisiana,” researched and developed by Shaun Williams. For each of the 185 schools identified on that site, our team utilized historical USGS topographical maps to pinpoint historic locations and Google Earth satellite and street view imagery to discover present conditions. Newspaper archives and recent articles, historic Sanborn fire insurance maps, blog posts, and other historical resources were also consulted throughout the process. (Scroll to the bottom of this page for a listing of these additional sources by parish.)
Note: Despite the careful methodology and effort that went into the creation of this list of standing schools, it is very possible that there are schools that were misidentified as no longer standing or not located at all. We apologize for any omissions and welcome information on standing schools in Louisiana not included here.
