AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
C. H. Irion High School
Bossier Parish

Bossier Training School started out in 1902, as the North Calvary Baptist Association was planning to build an elementary and high school in Benton. The school was named The Benton School, and appears on topographical maps in 1932. The school grew as the Bossier Parish School Board acquired more land and used Rosenwald funding to construct new buildings. In 1907 a new building was constructed and later in 1922 a new two-story school was built. The school officially became known as Bossier Parish Training School in 1928 and the school continued to grow. During the following years the school became known as C. H. Irion High School in 1954 until integration. Following desegregation, C. H. Irion High School became the integrated Benton Elementary School, which still exists today. Over the years a horse-racing track, a gymnasium, and additional wing were added. Benton High School was constructed in 1999 not far from the elementary school.
