AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Big Zion School
Tangipahoa Parish

Big Zion A.M.E. Church is the oldest of the historically African American churches in Tangipahoa Parish, although the church has never had any limitations to membership based on race. In its earliest days, the church was known as the Roseland Methodist Church. In 1865, Bishop Clinton set apart the Louisiana Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church with three churches, namely Big Zion, Butler Chapel in Amite, Louisiana, and Tasker Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Ponchatoula, Louisiana. Later, more land was given to Big Zion totaling about four acres, upon which the Big Zion School was built, as well as a cemetery.
