AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Lincoln High School
Lincoln Parish
Lincoln High School’s history begins in 1885 in southwest Ruston, Louisiana. The school eventually became known as Ruston Normal Colored High School and then Ruston Colored High School, but the two-story structure burned down in a fire in 1922. A new two-story brick building was constructed in a part of town called Washington Heights at the time and the school was renamed as Washington High School in 1925. Soon after its renaming, the school's name was changed again to Lincoln High School, in favor of President Lincoln instead of President Washington. A new brick building with twenty-six rooms was constructed again at the school’s current location. The school eventually became an elementary school and the facilities still stand extant and in use as the Lincoln Learning Center.
