AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Union Central High School
Caldwell Parish
Union Central High School’s history began in the late 1800s when a Rosenwald School was established in the Banks Springs Community. The school was then moved to the Brownville community in the early 1900s and was called the Progressive Elementary School until a fire destroyed it in 1926. A new school was built in 1927 on land donated by Caesar W. Brown, and the school was named Union Central. As small schools continued to grow throughout this region of Louisiana, the need for a centralized high school led to the construction of a new building in 1937. Overall, 14 schools consolidated into Union Central High School including Locust Grove, Oak Grove, Good Hope, Kelly, Garden Valley, Enterprise, Rosenwald, Cuba, Mezpah, Cane, Hopewell, St. Peter, Cedar Grove, and the Progressive School. The school continued to grow until it was integrated in 1971. Union Central High School is still in use today as Union Central Elementary School where it still serves the community of Banks Springs.
