AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Southdown High School
Terrebonne Parish

Houma Negro School, later named Southdown High School, was initially built in 1953 to provide educational opportunities for African American students during segregation. In 1969, Terrebonne Parish moved toward integration and Southdown High School became Southdown Elementary School. In 2015, the school board voted to demolish and rebuild Southdown Elementary School. Demolition began in 2016 and a new Southdown Elementary was opened to students for the 2019 school year
