AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Princeton High School
Bossier Parish
Princeton High School began in the early 1900s on the estate of Reverend John Hawkins, but the permanent site of the school was purchased in 1910 and a one-room building was constructed to serve the consolidating schools in the area. The school was named Cedar Grove School, but later became a Rosenwald School in 1919 and was renamed to Princeton-Rosenwald. In 1933 a teacher’s cottage was even constructed on the campus. Over the years the school grew and two brick buildings with sixteen classrooms were designed by architect Thomas Merideth and built to facilitate the students’ learning in 1955. The new school was renamed as Princeton High School in 1956, and additional wings were added in 1961 and 1974. As schools began to integrate some students chose to attend Haughton School, but as time went on the school was fully integrated and closed as a high school. Today, the school is still extant and in use as Princeton Elementary School.
