AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Patterson Negro School
St. Mary Parish
Hattie A. Watts was the daughter of enslaved parents who were later freed in the 1860s. Their family moved to the town of Patterson, then Pattersonville, where her father was a Pastor and local educator. Watts learned everything she knew from her father and continue his passion by becoming an educator in Pattersonville’s first African American school. Though not accredited by the school board at the time, Watts continued teaching at the school until the construction of Patterson Negro School in 1912. Here, should continue to teach along with hosting her own adult learning classes for those in need in the community. Her contribution to the African American community was honored when the school’s name was changed to Hattie A. Watts High School in 1958. Today, the school has been converted to Hattie A.
