AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Mt. Mariah High School
Jackson Parish
Mt. Mariah opened in 1958 outside of Chatham, Louisiana and also became known as Chatham Negro School and Jasper Henderson High School as the school progressed. Located near Chatham Lake, the school stands in front of a wooded area off a central road leading into town. There are several brick buildings on the property, including a double-height gymnasium that is at the forefront of the campus. The campus operated as Henderson Jasper Elementary School following desegregation up until 2006 when it closed, and it now stands vacant. The school is in good condition and includes plenty of green space. Given its condition and setting, this school could be an asset to the community if developed.
