AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Kenner Colored High School
Jefferson Parish

Originally built in the 1940s, Kenner Colored School changed its name to Washington Elementary School in 1957. The school remained open through integration in 1971. With its long history of serving students in the African American community, this school is a point of pride for the locals, although it has struggled to keep enrollment up in recent years. It was listed as a school to be closed on a recent school closure plan in the parish, but as of March 2020, the school narrowly avoided closure thanks to a last-minute amendment to the plan to keep it open. It is still in operation as Washington Elementary School. If its enrollment remains below 350 students for the 2021-2022 school year, it may be forced to close.
