AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Kennedy Memorial High School
Ascension Parish
Kennedy Memorial High School was built sometime in the mid-1960s as a school for African American high school students. John F. Kennedy, the school’s namesake, was assassinated in November 1963. The school was not in operation as a high school for very long, though -- only a few years later, it saw its last graduating class in Spring of 1968. In Fall of that same year, Kennedy Memorial closed and reopened as East Ascension Junior High School. The school was ultimately was renamed Gonzales Middle School, which is still in operation today in the historic mid-century high school building.
