AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Holy Ghost School
St. Landry Parish
Holy Ghost School was originally the St. Joseph School, named after sister Josephine, that taught only elementary until 1919 when Diocese of Lafayette opened a new church for the growing African American population (Holy Ghost Church); Father James Hyland merged St. Joseph School with the church and in 1921 Holy Ghost School began and held its first graduation in 1924. In 1925 it was renamed Holy Ghost Training School and later in 1933 simply Holy Ghost High School. The original building was demolished in 1955 and rebuilt on the footprint and reopened in 1956. In 1959 the rest of the old building was demolished and a new elementary school was built in its honor, called Holy Ghost Elementary School.
