AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Herod High School
Vermillion Parish
Herod High School was founded by Reverend James Herod, a scholar and educator within St. Mary Congregational Church, where he served for 14 years. As demand for enrollment increased, the original school was demolished and Herod High School was opened in a larger school building in 1955. This iteration remained opened for two more decades before being shut down during desegregation. The school opened a final time in the 1980s as an elementary school before closing permanently in 1990. Recently, Pastor Walter August Jr., an Abbeville native, purchased Herod High School. August has plans for the school to become a educational and cultural center for Abbeville youth.
