Tangipahoa Parish
Greenville Park High School was originally founded in 1906 as Hammond Colored School by Mr. P. Jenkins, the school’s first principal. It educated students in grades 1-6 until 1929, and had seven teachers, two rooms, and a three-month school session. In 1936, the school added three more grades and the school year was extended to eight months under principalship of Mr. Billy Purnell. It was later renamed Hammond Colored High School and in 1943, it became a full-fledged high school with nine-month school session. Under the principalship of Mr. Jesse Davis Sr., the school’s name changed once again to Greenville Park High School in 1954. The 1963-1964 school year saw 562 students enrolled in grades 9-12, and had 26 teachers on staff. GPHS was classified as a AAA school. Its last graduating class was 1969, after which it became a Junior High School in 1970. The school is currently operating as Greenville Park Leadership Academy, with students in grades 4-8.
