Crepe Myrtle High School
Rapides Parish

Crepe Myrtle High School, later renamed John S. Slocum High School, was opened for African American students in the Pineville community in 1966. The school graduated seven classes before closing in 1973, with the first graduating class recognizing around 30 students. Slocum High School excelled in sports and literary organizations before integration and there are many strong alumni memories revolving around the school. This includes Pineville‘s current mayor Clarence Fields, an alumna of the school. Today Slocum High School is owned by industrial corporation Stella Jones and, in tandem with the mayor and the community, they are working to continue the life of Slocum High School.
