AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Coleman High School
Bienville Parish

This school had its inception in 1887 when Professor O. L. Coleman founded Coleman College. The school was moved in 1889 to its current location where the first brick building was constructed in 1908. Coleman College grew over the years and was a successful school in the area until it closed in 1937 and moved to Shreveport, Louisiana. The school became a bible college but was only open until the mid-1950s. After the closure of Coleman College in Gibsland, the Bienville Parish School System bought the land and created Gibsland Colored High School. The name was changed soon after to Coleman High School since the White school at the time was named Gibsland High School. After integration in 1970, Gibsland High School merged with Coleman High School on this site and was renamed Gibsland-Coleman High School. The school still stands extant and in use as it serves the community of Gibsland.
