AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Charles H. Brown High School
Webster Parish
Brown High School’s story started in 1901 when a school was organized off of what is now Main Street in Springhill, Louisiana. The school became a Rosenwald School in 1937 and was relocated across the street from its current location. The school was named to Springhill Colored School in 1948, and a new building was built. The building included a gymnasium, auditorium, library, and eight classrooms. In 1951, the school’s beloved principal, Charles H. Brown died and the school was renamed in his honor during the 1951-52 school year. Charles H. Brown High School continued to grow and in 1957, the A-frame building was torn down and replaced with a new brick, mid-century modern building. In 1970, Brown High School closed as a high school and the students were integrated into Springhill High School. Now, the school is extant and in use as Charles H. Brown Upper Elementary School.
