AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Chaneyville High School
East Baton Rouge Parish
Chaneyville High School can be traced the late 19th century, when James Johnson Bailey Chaney donated one acre of land for Philadelphia Baptist Church to build a one-room school. A few years later, a committee of parents asked the school board to move the school to a more central location at Reames Road at Jackson Road. A two-room school was built, funded by $25 donations by parents, and had outdoor bathrooms for boys and girls. Additional classrooms were added and the school remained at that site until the 1950-1951 school year, at which time a new school was built on a site just down the road. After the school board purchased more land and built a gymnasium, the new Chaneyville High School campus totaled 22 acres and educated grades K-12. Chaneyville High became the first high school on the northern end of East Baton Rouge Parish. Its first graduating class was in 1953, and its last was in 1979. The school was demolished in 2005, but the track and football goal posts still remain on the site. A sheriff’s substation is currently located on the former school site.
