AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Acardia Colored High School
Bienville Parish
This school began as Bienville Parish Training School in 1923 with the support of the Rosenwald Foundation and the Slater Fund. The current school buildings were built in 1942, and several other school buildings were added over time. The school eventually became known as Arcadia Colored High School in the 1940s. In 1954, a gymnasium was added that was designed by architect C. Scott Yeager and was built under the contractor, McInnis Brothers. Later in 1959, the school was renamed as Crawford High School and served the community of Arcadia until it closed in 1964 due to integration. Several of the buildings have been demolished, but four still stand vacant today. Now, there is community interest in revitalizing the extant buildings.
