AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOL BUILDING REVIVAL
Adam Carlson High School
St. Martin Parish

Before 1960, African American students in St. Martinville and other neighboring towns had to travel 20 minutes away to Breaux Bridge for their education. Adam Carlson and other residents petitioned for another African American school in St. Martin Parish and in 1960 the high school was constructed and named in his honor. Adam Carlson High School served students in grades 9-12. The high school held ten graduation ceremonies before being converted into a junior high school with integration. Today, the school is being used as St. Martinville Elementary School.
